FREEDOM ISN'T FREE

I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze
A young Marine saluted it, and then
He stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.

I thought, how many men like him
Had fallen through the years?
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many Pilots' planes shot down?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, Freedom is not free.

I heard the sound of taps one night,
When everything was still.
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That taps had meant "Amen"
When a flag had draped a coffin
of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.

I thought about a graveyard
at the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, Freedom isn't free!!

From the Presidents Desk
Welcome,

Well, here we are with resolution 1026. This resolution was passed
unanimously at the DEC 8-10 Jan 2010. The changes we wanted to see will
probably not come to fruition for quite some time. However, I do believe in the
long run they will see loss of membership and with that the need to include all
members of the American Legion regardless of motorcycle ownership or not.
Personal opinion...

I had hoped 2010 would be better than last, however, that remains to be
seen. The  American Legion Riders Program within the state as we knew it
will change.  The Old system is gone, all Charters are gone. The Program will
begin anew.

An American Legion Riders Program Committee has been appointed at the
Department Level. Their job will be over site of the PA ALR and formation of
the New Program from the Chapter up.

1st order of business is to get the Chapters back online. In doing so
three
things
need to be accomplished:

1. The Chapter needs to be re-authorized by the Post during a Post meeting
and the minutes of the meeting recorded.
Obtain a copy of the minutes

2. Appropriate Liability Insurance needs to be attained by riders during any
American Legion Riders sponsored event,  the Post must also have the
appropriate amount of liability insurance coverage. (approved by the Post)
Proof of liability Insurance

3.  A roster of all Chapter members will need forwarded to Department
Headquarters with appropriate members information. Once received and
approved, a new Charter will be made for your Chapter.
A member roster

The changes within the PA American Legion Riders hierarchy will not be seen
at the Chapter level. All will remain the same within the Chapter with the
exception of those  items mentioned above.

During the April 2010 DEC a New Constitution and By-Laws will be
presented to the DEC committee for approval, when approved the By-Laws
will then be sent to all Chapters or placed on the Pennsylvania American
Legion  web site for download. Physical formation of the New PA ALR will
then begin and will then come under the Department of Pa. As so stated in
Resolution 1026.

Thanks for the respect and support you have given me as your President, if I
can be of help to any of you please don't hesitate to ask.

Keep the rubber side down and shiny side up.....

Future Rides / Planning
Killed in action the week before, the body of Staff Sergeant John C. Beale was returned to
Falcon Field in  Peachtree City , Georgia , just south of Atlanta , on June 11, 2009. The
Henry County Police Department escorted the procession to the funeral home inMcDonough
, Georgia . A simple notice in local papers indicated the road route to be taken and the
approximate time.

Nowadays one can be led to believe that America no longer respects honor and no longer
honors sacrifice outside the military. Be it known that there are many places in this land
where people still recognize the courage and impact of total self-sacrifice. Georgia, and the
South in general, remains steadfast for the most part. Thank God Southern folk still 'get it.'

The link below is a short travelogue of that day's remarkable and painful journey. But only
watch this if you wish to have some of your faith in people restored. Please share widely.
